DESCRIPTION :

The operational ‘philosophy’ to engage stakeholders in developing the OA approach which has been followed in this research, can be best described as participatory action research. Its purpose is not (primarily) to advance scientific knowledge but to achieve and improve practical applications that address real problems. The research by design methodology is structured around three parts. Firstly, a framework has been developed to integrate the process of urban renewal and adaptation at the scale of a single building to a neighborhood. Secondly, design principles have been identified and supporting tools developed to produce dynamic designs based on adaptation pathways. Thirdly, workshops have been organized to actively engage stakeholders and end-users in the refinement and demonstration of the resulting OA approach using a case study area and to conduct an ex-ante evaluation.
